Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) Treatment

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) involves the use of a mild electrical current to stimulate the nerve for therapeutic purposes. The treatment is commonly used to alleviate acute and chronic pain, with its advantages of effectiveness, safety, relatively low cost, the ability to self-administer, and availability over the counter without a prescription.

How does the TENS unit help relieve pain?

The TENS unit applies small and safe electrical pulses through your skin to your painful points. The electrical pulses can disrupt the working process of pain receptors, blocking them from sending pain signals to the brain, giving instant relief from pain. The electrical pulses also stimulate the never system to promote the release of endorphins which are the natural pain killer in the body, providing you with long-lasting pain relief.

What kind of pain can TENS help relieve?

TENS can be used to help reduce pain caused by a wide range of conditions:

  • Acute pain – Pain that lasts less than three months, such as pain associated with surgery, trauma, and medical procedures.
  • Musculoskeletal pain – Pain that affects bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, or tendons. Some evidence supports the therapeutic benefits of using TENS in chronic musculoskeletal pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Period pain

Contraindications

People with pregnancy, epilepsy, and pacemaker are not allowed to use TENS. Additionally, TENS can not be applied over the eyes, trans-cerebrally, the front of the neck, over the spine, over tumors, over broken skin, or lesions…

Always check with your doctor or healthcare professional before using the device. And carefully read the device instruction before use.
